Martian Law Enforcement - Frequently Asked Question #12a

Even if you do get to Mars, how are you to enforce any kind of law there? Also if somebody else landed there just after you (if you ever did get there) with weapons, couldnt they just take over? Even if the gravity effects the logistics and speed of a bullet, whats to stop poisons, swords, knifes etc.? Jan. 27, 2002

Two factors will enable us to enforce our laws on Mars if we are able to get there first. First of all, establishing the first base will be very expensive. However, once production of fuel (liquid Oxygen) begins on Mars and Deimos, the cost of transportation to Mars will be greatly reduced. Therefore, it would be much cheaper to go to Mars using our spaceships and bases than it would be to start over and establish a base using only supplies brought from Earth. We would make people who use our services pledge to respect our laws and would make them dependent on our supplies. Secondly, we are not naive enough to think that weapons will never be needed in space. Our bases will be properly fortified and staffed with armed security personnel. However, we will not go to war with another organization if they decide to establish a competing base on Mars unless they are very close to us and threaten our viability. We will simply try to grow faster than they do and make it more profitable to deal with us than with any other group. There is plenty of land on Mars. Even if we only end up with part of Mars I will consider our mission a success.
